Phase-1 Fitting Support

Bathroom Measurements

Use this guide to prepare preliminary measurements for toileting, bathing, shower access and bathroom-support planning. It can be used for children or adults.

You do not need to complete every field. Enter “Not sure” or “Unable to measure safely” where appropriate.

These measurements support SafetyAid’s equipment review but do not confirm final suitability, installation safety or transfer safety.

Keep the bathroom dry and safe while measuring

Do not take measurements on a wet or slippery floor. Do not ask the person to enter the bathroom, stand, transfer, sit on the toilet or use the shower merely to complete this guide.

Measure the environment while it is safely accessible. Stop if there is a fall risk, difficult transfer, unstable surface or electrical hazard. Record “Unable to measure safely” when necessary.

Preparation

Before you start

  • Use centimetres unless the guide states otherwise.
  • Keep the bathroom floor dry and clear.
  • Measure fixed surfaces and clear spaces without performing a transfer.
  • Do not climb, stretch over wet areas or move heavy bathroom fixtures.
  • Ask another adult to assist when one person cannot measure safely.
  • Record “Not sure” rather than guessing.
  • Note any existing grab bars, commode chairs, shower chairs or transfer equipment.
  • Take photos only when the bathroom is safe and empty.
Safe preparation

Measure the bathroom environment first

Toilet and seating height

Measure from the finished floor to the top of the toilet seat or the surface normally used. Do not transfer the person onto the toilet just to obtain the measurement.

Doorway and clear space

Measure the clear opening of the doorway and the usable floor space. Note doors, thresholds, fixtures or furniture that restrict wheelchair or caregiver access.

Shower or bathing area

Measure the usable shower or bathing space while the floor is dry. Do not enter an unsafe wet area or stand inside a bathtub to measure.

Grab-bar and wall support

Record existing support locations and identify walls where support may be considered. Do not drill, install or test a grab bar based only on this preliminary guide.

Unable to measure safely

Leave the value blank or record “Unable to measure safely.” SafetyAid may request a clear photo, professional observation or later measurement.

A family member or caregiver may prepare preliminary bathroom measurements. Complex transfers, poor balance, weight-bearing limitations, pain, involuntary movement or restricted bathroom space may benefit from input from a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, rehabilitation professional or accessibility specialist.

Professional involvement is helpful where needed but is not required to begin a SafetyAid assessment.

This guide supports equipment and bathroom-environment preparation only. It does not provide medical diagnosis, treatment, transfer training, building approval or installation certification.

Any grab bar, wall-mounted support or structural modification should be assessed and installed by an appropriately qualified person.
