Measurement Guide

Home Safety & Accessibility Measurements

Use this guide to prepare preliminary measurements for doorways, walking paths, bedrooms, stairs, furniture layout and home-access support. It can be used for children or adults.

You do not need to complete every field. Enter “Not sure” or “Unable to measure safely” where appropriate.

These measurements support SafetyAid’s equipment and accessibility review but do not confirm structural suitability, installation safety or complete fall-risk control.

Do not create a new hazard while measuring

Do not climb on unstable furniture, use an unsafe ladder, move heavy furniture alone or enter an area where there is a fall, electrical or structural risk.

Measure only clear and safely accessible spaces. Stop if the person, caregiver or person taking measurements may become unstable or injured. Record “Unable to measure safely” when necessary.

Preparation

Before you start

  • Use centimetres unless the guide states otherwise.
  • Keep walking paths and floors clear.
  • Use good lighting.
  • Measure the clear usable space, not only the total wall-to-wall distance.
  • Do not move heavy beds, furniture or equipment alone.
  • Ask another adult to assist when one person cannot measure safely.
  • Record “Not sure” rather than guessing.
  • Note thresholds, rugs, steps, door direction and fixed obstacles.
  • Take photos only when the area is safe and private.
Safe preparation

Measure the space as it is normally used

Doorways and walking paths

Measure the narrowest clear opening and the usable path after accounting for door frames, handles, furniture and equipment.

Bed and transfer space

Measure the bed height and clear space on the side normally used for transfers or caregiver assistance. Do not move or transfer the person merely to take measurements.

Stairs, steps and thresholds

Record the number, approximate height and location of steps or thresholds only when they can be observed safely. Do not climb or lean over stairs to measure.

Bathroom and bedroom access

Record doorway restrictions, turning space, furniture position and obstacles affecting access.

Support placement

Note existing rails, furniture supports or possible support locations. Do not drill, install or load-test any support based only on this preliminary guide.

Unable to measure safely

Leave the value blank or record “Unable to measure safely.” SafetyAid may request a photo, video, professional observation or later measurement.

A family member or caregiver may prepare preliminary home measurements. Complex access, transfer, mobility, balance, fall-risk or structural-modification needs may benefit from input from an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, accessibility specialist, rehabilitation professional or appropriately qualified building professional.

Professional involvement is helpful where needed but is not required to begin a SafetyAid assessment.

This guide supports preliminary equipment and accessibility planning only. It does not provide medical diagnosis, treatment, a complete home-safety assessment, structural approval or installation certification.

Rails, ramps, wall-mounted supports and structural modifications should be assessed and installed by appropriately qualified people.
