Phase-1 Fitting Support

Seating & Positioning Measurements

Use this guide to prepare preliminary measurements for postural chairs, customized seating and related positioning support. It can be used for children or adults.

You do not need to complete every field. Enter “Not sure” or “Unable to measure safely” where appropriate.

Measurements support SafetyAid’s equipment review but do not confirm final sizing, suitability or safety.

Measure only in a stable, supported sitting position

Use the person’s usual supportive seating or another safely supported position. Do not remove necessary supports or force the pelvis, trunk, head, hips, knees or feet into a straighter position merely to take a measurement.

Stop if the person becomes uncomfortable, unstable or experiences pain. Record “Unable to measure safely” when a measurement cannot be taken reliably.

Preparation

Before you start

  • Use centimetres.
  • Keep the pelvis and trunk supported as normally required.
  • Support the head and feet when needed.
  • Keep the measuring tape straight without pressing into the body.
  • Ask another adult to assist when one person cannot position the tape safely.
  • Do not force the knees, hips or trunk into a different posture.
  • Record “Not sure” rather than guessing.
  • Note any existing seating, cushions, belts or supports that affect normal posture.
Safe positioning

Use the person’s usual posture

Supported sitting

Take measurements while the person is comfortably and safely supported. Use their normal seating position whenever practical.

Postural differences

Record visible asymmetry, leaning, pelvic position or support needs in the notes. Do not attempt to correct posture manually just to produce a different measurement.

Unable to sit safely

Do not attempt unsupported sitting. Record “Unable to measure safely” and seek assistance from another caregiver or professional when appropriate.

A family member or caregiver may prepare preliminary measurements. Complex posture, seating, tone, asymmetry or pressure-management needs may benefit from help from a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, orthotist or rehabilitation professional.

Professional involvement is helpful when needed but is not required to begin a SafetyAid assessment.

This guide supports equipment preparation only. It does not provide medical diagnosis, treatment or clinical assessment.
