Pediatric seating and positioning

A useful seating system should support the child’s posture and daily activity without ignoring comfort, growth, transfers, pressure risk and caregiver handling.

When a seating review may be useful

Review is appropriate when the child cannot maintain a safe or useful sitting position, shows asymmetry, slides forward, fatigues quickly or cannot participate comfortably in daily activities.

Postural control

Head control, trunk stability, pelvic position and the amount of external support required.

Daily function

Feeding, play, learning, communication, transport and interaction with tables or other surfaces.

Care and safety

Transfers, skin pressure, pain, growth, caregiver access and any professional precautions.
